A neighbor once aggressively shouted at my mother to “go back to Mexico”. Just like that, no filters no discretion, just blatant racism.
She doesn’t have an accent and I’m sure Mexican clothes nowadays are just as westernized as the U.S or Canada…
But wait. Her skin is brown. Not like the fair brown Spanish that colonized the Americas but like the deep brown of Natives or dark skinned Mexicans. Did her skin color single her out to be called a foreigner?
The thing is my mom is not Mexican she is American in the truest sense of the word. Not only because she was born and raised here but because the blood of her Apache ancestors runs through her veins. She even lives on the very land that her tribe once walked on.
It was ironic because he was of European descent. If anything he was the one from a different country. And yet he was telling an Indigenous woman to go back to a country where she has no roots in.
How can someone with ancestors of a different land discriminate against someone whose family can be traced back here before Columbus was even born? Self-righteous entitlement. That’s how.
With all of this talk of immigration reform policies in the news recently, I just wonder, what gives them the right? The right to take away the same opportunity that their immigrant ancestors had? The right to call for “catch and release” policies, and deport children brought here by no choice of their own back to poverty stricken and violent countries? The right to confidently say that “America is mine and if you want to live here legally than our legislators will make it as difficult as possible.”? The right to say undignified remarks like “they’re stealing our jobs.” and the favorite “they’re going to weaken our economy.”, none of which is true. Evidence shows that it’s actually the contrary.
So when did America, “Land of the Free” become, ” My Land, it’s Free but you can’t live here.”?
